Special Needs Cycling

A great video of testimonials on how recumbent trikes and bikes significantly enhance the lives of people with special needs. (It brought a wee small tear to me eye) Hearing these testimonies and seeing how trikes enhance our clients lives is one of the main reasons we are in the business of promoting and selling trikes.

The TerraTrike Rambler 24 (2020) is the only tadpole trike in the industry that allow for riders up to 400 pounds and can accomodate riders sized from a child to well over 6′ in height

Health Problems & Special Needs
More and more we see customers that are moving to recumbent trikes because of health or special needs reasons. The trike platform allows is perfect for customers with:

Height / Weight Restrictions
The TerraTrike Rambler 24 (2020)  is the only tadpole trike in the industry that allow for riders up to 400 pounds and can accomodate riders sized from a child to well over 6′ in height. The Rover is also fully adjustable between these sizes using the quick reasese seat and adjustable boom. It truly is one-size-fits-most! The ICE Adventure HD is fully capable of handling riders up 325 lbs.

Knee / Hip Joint Replacement
Most of our customers that have had knee or hip joints replaced have been sent to us by their rehabilitation therapist or orthopedics doctor and recommend exercise of the muscles around the joint without jogging or pounding the area excessively after surgery.

Trikes are perfect for that. The rider can build muscle back and extend the joint through using smooth pedal action. If the leg muscles are weak on hills, they simple gear down a few gears and go slower, but use less pressure. Reduce the joint stress and still continue your exercise!

Riders with back or neck issues that can’t lean forward to ride a normal upright bike, find the recumbent seat with it’s adjustable recline and ergonomic , laid-back design, extremely comfortable.

Back / Neck Problems Chiropractors recommend TerraTrikes regularly to their customers. In fact, Terra Trikes are endorsed by the Michigan Chiropractic Association. Riders with back or neck issues that can’t lean forward to ride a normal upright bike, find the recumbent seat with it’s adjustable recline and ergonomic, laid-back design, extremely comfortable. The seat gives full support and even lumbar support throughout.

Weak Legs In some instances, from problems caused from diabetes, polio, or nerve injuries, riders can handle the recumbents by adding clipless or strapped/stirrup pedals, therefore keeping both feet solid on the pedals on the back turn, and safely applying pressure constantly without slipping. Not only are they getting great cardiovascular exercise, but they are building leg muscles at the same time.

Balance / Spacicity / Mobility Issues Trikes allows riders with balance, spacicity and mobility issues a chance to get back to riding. Because there isn’t the issue of maintaining a certain speed to stay balanced on 2 wheels like an upright bike, riders can focus on riding.  Steering is also fluid and can in most cases even be don with one hand. Optional single-handed shifters and/or brakes can help with riders with limited use of one arm. Clipless or strapped/stirrup pedals also allow for keeping both feet solid on the pedals on the back turn, and safely applying pressure constantly without slipping. Not only are they getting great cardiovascular exercise, but they are building leg muscles at the same time.

Blindness
Our Tandem Pro and Rover Tandem attachments perfect for blind riders who want to ride and have a captain available to steer for them. Our independent Pedaling System (IPS) allows for each rider to pedal at their own cadence and power level.

Disabilities
Trikes are the perfect therapy for people with disabilities or assisted needs riders. With a wide range of special needs accessories (and more coming every day), adapting a Trike to specifically meet the needs of your disability is not problem.

Rehabilitation / Physical Therapy Needs
Trikes works closely with a wide range of rehabilitation  hospitals, and physical therapy facilities. Therapists and Doctors love Trikes for it’s ergonomic design and how it motivates patients to continue with their exercise / therapy treatments. It also gets the patient out into the outdoors which is a great morale motivator. Many patients add the optional roller-trainer that converts their trike to an indoor recumbent exerciser during off season.
